Start with the import health standard
New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries publishes an import health standard for wood packaging and guidance on the importing process. Its guidance incorporates ISPM 15 and identifies certification and other conditions that can apply. The importer should confirm the applicable pathway for the actual packaging and goods.
Describe the complete packaging assembly
Give the importer a material list covering pallets, cases, collars and loose timber. Explain whether the packaging supports other cargo or is itself the imported product. Those descriptions help the importer find the relevant requirements rather than answering only a generic question about wooden pallets.
Condition remains important after treatment
Keep packaging protected and identifiable before use. Inspect it near packing for damage, contamination or signs of pests, and refer concerns to the supplier. Treatment does not create permanent protection against later infestation or settle cleanliness requirements for every destination.
Confirm records before loading
Ask the importer what documentation or declarations it needs and who will complete them. Keep the actual packaging specification and supply reference available. Do not assume that a generic treatment statement for a different order answers a question about the units in the container.
Customer handling requirements
Request the receiving customer’s pallet dimensions, construction and equipment requirements. Include cargo support, loaded height and any restrictions on condition or material. Packaging acceptance by a customer and compliance with an import health standard answer different questions.
Build a useful buying brief
State New Zealand as the final destination, identify any onward route and give quantity, cargo information, dimensions and UK delivery postcode. Include the packing date and unloading equipment. Product availability, treatment arrangements, price and delivery require confirmation against the enquiry.
