What this size tells you
Start from the cargo and handling route, then agree a footprint. Bespoke dimensions should be supported by a drawing or clear measurements showing product contact points, overhang and fork approach.
A footprint is not a load rating
The external length and width do not specify board thickness, support members, connections, material condition or permissible loading. Give the supplier the gross weight and load contact areas, together with floor, fork, conveyor and racking conditions. Ask for confirmation of suitability for the product offered; do not transfer a rating from a different pallet with the same outline.
A worked planning example
If two products share a delivery but have very different weights and footprints, combining them on one large base is a design decision. Compare support, restraint, handling and freight requirements before assuming it saves money.
Orientation and receiving equipment
Label length and width on the drawing and show the fork-entry sides. Two rotated descriptions can refer to the same rectangle but different construction or handling assumptions. Send any customer or warehouse specification, including exact product identity where required. Check the total loaded height and dimensions with the freight operator.
Treatment, quantity and delivery
Include the final export destination, treatment and marking requirements, new or used preference and quantity. State where the empty pallets are needed and when packing begins. Mention collars, timber blocks and other packaging components. The team confirms the offered design, availability, price and delivery against the complete brief.
